Why Weddings Cost So Much

One of the biggest hurdles for parents planning a wedding is that thirty years may have passed since they last planned a wedding. To say things have changed in that time is an understatement. Back then, brides were often unaware of the costs and the mom of the bride often made all the plans.

To give perspective, I often tell couples and their parents to think the cost of medium-priced cars then and now. Then, a car cost about ,500, the same as the cost of a wedding. Today, a wedding with all the trimmings still costs the same as a mid-priced new car, which can be around ,000 to 50,000, depending on the locale.

Before you argue that sounds like too much money, remember the cost of the wedding is much more than the ceremony location and food and beverage expenses. Couples often underestimate their wedding expenses by calculating only the cost of the reception. The cost of an officiant to marry them, the ceremony music, reception music, flowers for the ceremony and reception, invitations, and announcements are indispensable expenses that cannot be overlooked. There's also transportation, a wedding dress, tuxedos, a wedding cake, a photographer, a videographer, party favors, and the exercise dinner. Regardless who will bear these costs, they are all factored into the total cost of a wedding.

Though often not figured directly into wedding expenses, I'm sure the bride does not think the costs of hair styling, make-up, manicures and other personal services in establishment for her to look her best to be minor incidentals. They are also real expenses unique to the wedding party, which will have many such extras.

Couples are also prone to miscalculating the estimate of guests. Some costs (wedding dress, ceremony, reception music, photography, flowers, for example) remain the same regardless how many guests attend. Many of the costs of a wedding are the same whether you will have 50 or 500 guests. Known as "hard costs", they will be spread over the estimate of guests. Food, beverages, cake, rental equipment, and favors are among the costs that vary with the estimate of guests.

Choices that can cost or save

Most weddings take place between April and October, with the majority being scheduled for summer. Couples may pay a superior for popular sites and services while busy wedding season. Since most weddings take place on weekends, they may also bear extra labor expenses.

Many vendors only get to book weddings on weekends and, often, only one wedding per day. Vendors have a itsybitsy time to make their money. They don't work weddings seven days a week. High-demand photographers, bakers and florists are able to payment superior rates that can inflate your expenses. Any bride who can think booking her wedding on "off" days -Fridays, Sundays or mid-week- can scrutinize suitable pricing opportunities.

Naturally, the cost of doing enterprise varies by location and region. Metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York City, are much more high-priced places to marry than Kansas City, Missouri. California and New York also have a relatively high cost of doing business, as do popular destination cities commonly superior for weddings.

If you stop to think about all that goes into planning a beautiful wedding, and the estimate of vendors who will lead to the day, it is easy to see why weddings cost so much. This is not like any other party you've hosted. However, if you settle what is most important to you before you commit to purchases, you can make choices that will help keep the cost of your dream wedding in line.

An eclectic collection: two novels, one from a never-read author and the upcoming smash from a proven winner. In the spring of 2009, Nigel Tomm and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Europe to write a book. A low-budget book its young producers called Remix Culture roared across internet and changed the velocity of abstract literature forever. Today, its ferocious ingenuity, relentless shocks and gore-gushing abstractness remain an absolute standard of modern abstract novel. WARNING: The present abstract novel contains no words. It's abstract - very abstract.

Not surpassingly, "Great by Choice" is receiving strong reviews. Collins is an finished rock climber and an even more finished firm observer. His books carry a great deal of coarse sense but I always find his contrarian, data-driven mental to be provoking and insightful.

"Great by Choice" attacks the demand of how to steer a firm to persisting success in an environment characterized by change, uncertainty and even chaos. Likely to be one of the Big firm books of 2012 similar to his earlier "Good to Great" and "Built to Last".

Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara and the Joint Chiefs and the Lies that Led to Vietnam by H.R. McMaster

I noted a reference to H.R. McMaster in George Bush's "Decision Points". Evidently, W found McMaster, a Us Army general who served in Vietnam during his early army days, an intelligent contrarian whose counsel W sought during the post-Iraq invasion years.

McMaster was passed over several times for promotion during his supreme career, allegedly in retribution for his outspoken views, some of which are captured in "Dereliction of Duty".

McMaster's thesis is likely similar to the field of a estimate of articles I read in Ramparts and other counter culture publications during the Vietnam debacle. Many referenced the absence of true troops and political brain reaching Lbj and his advisers. Walt Rostow, Lbj's extra Assistant for National security Affairs, was an unwavering believer in the Vietnam war and America's quality to triumph in the Asian jungles. Apparently, Rostow shaped and controlled the brain so selectively that the 1968 Tet nasty was unthinkable and unimaginable for Lbj and his cabinet.

Rostow's failed policies, of course, led to Lbj's exit: "I will not seek, I will not accept an additional one term as your President". Rostow himself left Washington and retreated to Texas academia.

Look send to this "insider's" perspective on the Vietnam failure.

Berlin 1961: Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Most hazardous Place on Earth by Frederick Kempe

As a graduate trainee visiting Europe in the early 1970's, I spent several days reveling in the-then West Berlin and trying to perceive East Berlin.

West Berlin lived for the occasion as if some invasion from the east would end the incessant relaxation celebrations.

East Berlin was a very separate world. Foreboding: bullet pock marks remained on the walls of building 30 years after Wwii ended. Border patrols pointed weapons on the slightest provocation. While the feared Stasi were not graphic their proximity was palpable.

Looking back to 1961, not a stretch to imagine East Berlin as the most hazardous place on earth.

11/22/63: A Novel by Stephen King

An admission. I may be one of those rare individuals who has never read a Stephen King novel. Not determined why I have not broken the spine of a King novel and now that I'm reading e-books, I'll likely never have that satisfaction.

In 2012 I'll slay that dragon, empty that item from the bucket list. Reviews are good, field matter is of great interest. So, I look send to the inaugural.

A Wanted Man by Lee Child

I learned of author Lee Child earlier this year. Somehow had overlooked his Jack Reacher novels despite always searching for a new and refreshing thriller writer. Thanks to Malcolm Gladwell for the recommendation via an interview.

Now that I read my way straight through each one of the 15 Reacher novels, I'm awaiting the release of #16 "A Wanted Man" in September or October.

A very long wait! A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway, an all-time favourite to be revisited.

Early last year I renewed acquaintance with Hemingway's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" after a 40+ year separation.

I plan to reconnect with "A Farewell to Arms" in 2012. My last encounter with this Hemingway masterpiece of Wwi was as a first year York University undergrad reading the Scribner's edition. Cost about .50.

This encounter will be via Kobo e-book version.

A Fine Balance (Oprah's Book Club) Overview

With a compassionate realism and narrative sweep that recall the work of Charles Dickens, this magnificent novel captures all the cruelty and corruption, dignity and heroism, of India. The time is 1975. The place is an unnamed city by the sea. The government has just declared a State of Emergency, in whose upheavals four strangers--a spirited widow, a young student uprooted from his idyllic hill station, and two tailors who have fled the caste violence of their native village--will be thrust together, forced to share one cramped apartment and an uncertain future.

As the characters move from distrust to friendship and from friendship to love, A Fine Balance creates an enduring panorama of the human spirit in an inhuman state.
