Author and historian Nell Irvin Painter presents at the 2010 National Book Festival. Speaker Biography: Nell Irvin Painter is the Edwards Professor of American History emerita at Princeton University, where she was director of African-American Studies from 1997 to 2000. Painter has published numerous books, articles, reviews and other essays. Her books include "Creating Black Americans" and "Southern History Across the Color Line." Painter was also chosen president of the Southern Historical Association for 2007 and president of the Organization of American Historians in 2007-2008. She has also served on numerous editorial boards and as an officer of many other professional organizations, including the American Historical Association, the American Antiquarian Society, the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History and the Association of Black Women Historians. The New York Times "Book Review" highly praised her current work, "The History of White People" (Norton), saying it "has much to teach everyone."
